Issak suggested that the video needs to set a narrative to represent the (main character's) personal story. The narrative will follow a teenage male living with their parents, of whom do not care or accept responsibility about their child. They forget about their child as they're so caught up in their own personal problems and arguments resulting from financial problems. This causes the teenage male's imagination to spiral and create an escape from the parental turmoil that they're caught up in and attempts to break the mould.
An important concept of the music video, that is key for the video's success is the change from normal to grey-scale filter. This does not only correspond to the lyrics, it also looks impressive if done correctly and helps the narrative come to life. Full colour shots and grey-scale shots also have clear colour differences which have different connotations.

Final Music Video
This is our completed music video. This is our completed digipak. This is the link to our final website. Our Final Website ...
Letter Of Permission To Artist
I wrote a letter to Def Jam Records in order to seek permission to create a music video to the song they distributed. Included in this I stated the purpose of this and that I was studying for my media studies A-level. I have posted it to them as I couldn't get hold of an email address.
Parody of Rap Videos
In this parody video they play on the fact that the original song and music video refers to drugs, but they change 'CoCo' to coca cola and the petrol station called Sunoco. They change what is a song all about drugs, obsessions and how cheap they're getting it, into a video located at a gas station. They talk about being broke and not being able to buy chocolate which replicate the drugs as they pick up many different types.
In this parody music video Jimmy Fallon plays on Will Smiths opening music video to the fresh prince of Bel Air. He create his journey to the stage where he hosts his show but does it in the style and similar lyrcs and storeyline as Will Smith does. He even mocks the costume and setting.
This parody video mocks the lyrics Drake raps as he delivers his message of how hard his life has been and to see the journey of where he started to where he is now. The people featuring in this parody music video mock the costumes of everyone in Drake's video even down to drawing on facial hair and wearing fake teeth and wigs.
Artist Research
We've decided that our final song choice will be Buried Alive by a white rapper - Logic.
Logic was born (Sir Robert Bryson Hall II)and is originally from Gaithersburg, Maryland who has amassed a large, dedicated fan base over the years, whom he calls the RattPack and BobbySoxers.
He grew up in a hectic environment, full of racism, drugs and alcohol abuse. He dropped our of high school, was kicked out of his mothers house and soon found himself living in his friends basement. This was where he would perfect his craft of making music, along with his other friends.
Logic released his first mixtape Young, Broke and Infamous in 2010 which caught the ears of Chris Zarou, president of Visionary Music Group (VMG). From then through 201, Logic released one mixtape a year through VMG. Shortly after being revealed as a 2013 XXL Freshman, it was announced that Logic had signed to Def Jam Recordings and his debut album would be executive produced by producer 'No I.D'. Through all this Logic headlined 3 of his own national tours and a European tour. He also toured with Kid Cudi and Krewella.
Logic's highly anticipated debut album 'Under Pressure' was released on October 21st 2014 through VMG and Def Jam and debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200. At the top of 2015, he completed his first world tour 'The Under Pressure Tour'.
Logic first became interested in rap by watching the movie 'Kill Bill' at the age of 15, for which RZA of Wu-Tang Clan did the score. He started listening to Wu-Tang and delved deeper into hip-hop from there. The first Hip-Hop album he brought was 'The Roots "Do You Want More?!?". Other big influences include his mentor Solomon Taylor and friend Lenbo, who let Logic live with him and make music in his basement.

Website & CD Covers Research
In order to gain an understanding of the style and layout of websites and cd covers for our genre we researched some other rapper's websites.

We looked at Kendrick Lamar's online presence first. He has an official website with links to his music on streaming services. He has his most recent music video on the front page of his website with links to itunes in order to buy his songs.
Similarly to Logic, the majority of the images that come up on a search have a black and white filter. We will have to take this into consideration when creating our artists image and website.
The website is minimalist and has links to iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify. The background of his site is his album cover which further promotes the album, which is an example of maintaining consistency among his products. His CD covers all have dark colours with black and white filtered images rather than colour. Also they have minimal writing on them and are mainly just the image and album title.
I also looked at 50 Cent and his online presence. Straight away when you search for images of him almost all are in colour, the minority being black and white filters. On Google he has links direct to his website and to Apple Music where you can listen to his music.
His website was also very simplistic as it featured the image of his newest album cover as his main background and then a list of the songs on his new album are presented in bold font.
You can easily download his current album just by clicking on the picture which takes you straight to iTunes. The colour scheme isn't dark like usual rap artist websites but it does stick to 3 or 4 dull, sandy colours.

Group Availability
I created a timetable for our group in order to clearly organise our frees together. By doing this we can all see when each of us are free and when we have frees together whereby we can do use this time to do group planning.
Planning Reflection #1
Today we each pitched 3 songs in order to narrow down our choices to 2. In my group is myself, Issak and James.
Issak pitched 3 songs to us, the first being Buried Alive - Logic. He thought this would be a good song to create a music video to as we could create an interesting narrative to in order to create a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. His narrative that he already came up with followed a strong story line. The only issue I put forward with this song is that it's just over 5 minutes long which might become a difficulty for us in terms of having enough shots and footage to not continually repeat the same shots over and over.
His second song was Dreams - Beck, we liked this song as it was quite catchy and enabled us to create an imaginative narrative or performance music video. He likes the artist and thinks the music video could have some interesting shots.
His third song choice is Ongoing Thing feat. Oddi and he chose this because he likes the instrumental however he doesn't have any ideas of what we could include in this video therefore this is my least favourite song out of his 3.
Then the next music video he liked is On Top - Flume feat. T-shirt and he thinks this song could be good for a hybrid of performance and narrative set in an urban environment. For this video it would be essential to build a really strong character to represent the song. The idea being that the video tracks the stars journey from being unknown to being 'on top' finding fame and everything that come in with it. As it is only just under four minutes the hardest part he thinks will be fitting it all in together.
His final song choice was Crackazat - Eye Light and he thinks this song could be good for a concept video as its only 2 minutes long and has no lyrics. As the song has a very fast tempo we would need a large variety of shots of obscure scenery and psychedelically imagery. He thinks finding the right location would be vital.

Reflection #2 - 18/09/15
During this week, we have learnt and discussed representations within the media world, especially in music videos. It made me think and question about the ways in which men and women are viewed within a music video. Whilst doing some independent research I found that the majority of people who played up to this and continued to participate in this stereotype were mainly individual female artists such as Beyonce, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna to name a few. But are they in control of how they are viewed and the fact that most of their videos involve the camera sectioning their body, or performing in few clothes? For someone like Miley Cyrus, I think yes, she knows her target audience and she aims to please them but she does it more for herself, because it's the image she controls. Whereas someone like Beyonce, in my opinion she does it in order to keep her audience captive, she's controlled by the media as the way in which they portray her is important to keep her viewers interested.
Final 3 Song Pitches
This is my pitch of 3 song suggestion for our final music video. Within this presentation I have included locations that we could film at, costumes we could wear and the actual idea of what would happen and take place within the music video. These 3 songs are all different as 2 are bands and one is a single female artist and they're all different genres. I would say that Ultraviolet fits into the pop category which would suit the majority of our target audience according to our survey responses, whereas, Kids In The Dark would fall more into the Rock genre, possibly appealing less to our target audience and lastly Keira Knightly's song is more of a ballad.
Music Video Timeline
St Louis Blues - Bessie Smith 1929
The video is shown in black and white which highlights clearly the time period in which this was recorded and performed. This also shows the quality of the camera was poor. The tracking shots especially aren't stable at all. There is more performance than concept or narrative in this video as it shows that they weren't technically advanced so they just filmed the artist and band performing. Their costumes are all very formal which represents the stereotype of this era, they all dress well especially when out. This also shows how the community worked in this historical period as people went out to listen to music and they all listened to singers in one room together. The type of shots don't vary as they mostly just stay as medium long shots. There isn't any order of narrative in this music video as the music video doesn't follow a narrative as well as having no special effects.
Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley 1956
In this video the colour this music video was filmed in is in black and white which identifies the period in which it was first filmed. There is concept to this video as the lyrics have a visual relationship and they're illustrated in this video which supports Andrew Goodwin's theory. The video follows Goodwins advice about advertising the song and music rather than creating a narrative. This video relies highly on the performance aspect and the star image as Elvis is in the foreground of any shots and the camera follows him when he moves around the set. There are few closeups but we already know he is the main artist. The props used such as a trombone also fit with the lyrics as he sings about it, also incorporating genre related props and iconography as you would expect a trombone or other similar instruments to be used in a rock band. All of their costumes match the theme of the song and video and the set (Jail) which makes the video more realistic. The shots used are mostly just long shots as they didn't focus on different types of shots to make it more realistic.
In the 70's most of Abba's music videos were all about the performance aspect and none showed any narrative other than in the lyrics as well as Queen and David Bowie. From the 70's, colour was used when filming and shooting videos which shows the improvement of technology. Also their costumes are really bright, colourful and sparkly which makes them stand out but also makes them recognisable which will help their band become well known. There is a much better variety of shots used in this music video which makes it much more flowing and interesting to watch. There are some close ups which helps to create star image for all 4 band members as they all have equal roles. Most of the music videos in the 70's were just videos of their live performances to real audiences.
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham 1984
This video is in a black and white filter by choice as by the 80's you could film in colour as the quality of the cameras and other equipment had improved dramatically. From the beginning we know that it's a band rather than an individual artist as we hear the different instruments playing separately. Their costumes immediately indicate a specific genre, being Rock, as the clothes are casual but stereo typically what a member of a rock band would wear. The camera shots are mainly all medium shots although there are a few closeups of just the main singer which creates a star image for their band.
November Rain - Guns N Roses 1992
Today - In the current media world today, music videos in general are not commonly watched. It's more about the song and unless someone really likes the song, only then will they watch the music video. However, some that are really into music and listen to it all the time, like to watch the music video that accompanies the song. The most commonly known way of watching a music video for most people would be through YouTube as it's easy to find any song you wish and can be viewed by anyone. There are quite a few music channels on the TV and people also watch the music videos on these but you don't have the freedom like you do on YouTube to chose your own songs.
Issues
Overtly sexual, violent and explicit music videos distributed online will carry adviosry age ratings in the UK.
The trial measures were originally introduced on October 1st 2014 when the UK arms of Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music partnered with digital platforms Vevo and YouTube to put clearly identifiable age classifications on music that are deemed unsuitable for children. This has now been made permenant, with all 3 companies agreeing to submit content of an adult nature to the BBFC which will, in turn, classify the videos into 12,15 or 18 age categories.
The sort of scenes and issues which the BBFC considers in classifying music videos include: drug misuse, dangerous behaviour that is presented as safe, band language, sexual behaviour and nudity, and threatening behaviour and violence.

This video first aired on MTV in 1984, and straight away you can see they've focused mainly on performance. They rely solely on the performance of the song selling it. They use thought beats in the beginning as the music and visuals match on the 'Jitterbug' which grabs your attention straight away. The use of low and high key lighting gives the video a different effect which make you interested wanting to watch more. The use of closeups create a star image of the main singer who always appears in the foreground, but the band are also featured in the background.

November Rain - Guns N Roses 1992
This video broke the stereotype in the 90's based on the length of the video as it takes a long song and entwines a narrative into it along with performance elements. They were a particularly iconic band of this time as the lead singer and lead guitarist were very charismatic performers, catching the public's eye, which in their own form created their star image. From watching, it's a very atmospheric video and at times quite dramatic.

Audience Research
Uses and Gratification Theory
Its a popular approach to understanding mass communication . The theory places more focus on the consumer or audience, instead of the actual message itself by asking "what people do with media" rather than "what media does to people".
Personal Identification:
Being able to recognize and relate to the individual song relating it to a mood or emotion. It could also be a role model which is identified by reflecting similar values of your own. For example, the Abide with me hymn, is a song my family could listen to and always feel similar emotions to.
Information:
Being able to learn something informational about the song and gain some knowledge or understanding about a particular subject. For example, Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' as she tries to put forward her lesson of people shaking off hate from others.
Entertainment:
What you are consuming should give you some form of enjoyment and some form of 'escapism' enabling us to forgot our worries temporarily. For example, I like Jason Derulo as all of his music is fairly laid back but also relate able.
Social Interaction:
The ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people, sparks debate, or songs my friends and I would listen to when we get together. For example, we like the song 'Rum and Red bull' and it's a song we all know the lyrics too.
How do I consume music?
I usually consume music through my Iphone or my Laptop as I would normally listen to music through my laptop if i'm getting ready for a party with friends or at a social occasion with friends/ family. Also, I prefer to listen to music in the afternoon as it means I can relax or i'll listen to it when I have some school work to do, as it means I can concentrate and focus. When i'm in the car, my dad and I have similar music taste so we like to listen to the same radio stations and songs. I tend to listen to different songs or playlists according to my mood so I can personally identify with specific lyrics and the emotions they create.

Audience Research - Results
This shows that most people watch music videos and therefore they currently quite popular. This would mean that hopefully most people would watch my video.
The results for this question show that the majority of people like a music video to have a narrative although some also said they didn't like to see a narrative unfold. This means that my music video could contain parts of a narrative to please some viewers but doesn't have to have a narrative in order to attract viewers.
From this question we can see that pop is currently the most popular genre closely followed by by dance and then RnB. I will take this into account as these are the top 3 rated genres so in order to please my target audience I should create a music video in the genre they're interested in.
These results show that the majority of people wanted to see dancing in a music video, however it was closely followed by people who only sometimes liked to see dancing. In order to resolve this I will make sure that my video does have some dancing in but that we don't solely focus on dancing, this way we will please our target audience.
As we expected the majority of people said yes to wanting the artist to be featured in the music video and only a small amount said they didn't want to see the artist.
From these results we can see that for the majority, nothing really put them off when watching a music video when it was to do with colours. However, sepia wasn't liked by many so we will make sure we don't use that in our music video.
Most people prefer to see a music video take place in multiple locations therefore we will try to incorporate this into our music video and make sure we use more than one location when we shoot.
Most people agreed that a music video can detract from the music itself and in the next question they said why.
The most common answer as to whether the music can detract from the music itself and this was mostly because they thought the video was unrelated to the music. They also thought there was too much diegetic sound which was unnecessary.
From these results we can see that even though people listened to a song they didn't automatically buy the song. This means we need to think about the way we release our music video and on which platforms we make it view-able to the target audience.
Banana Phone Task
For this task we were set 7 different stations with different filming tasks. Once we had all the shots we needed, each group member had to edit it seperately so that we all had a different outcome.
This really helped me as it gave me an insight into all the different shots and effects we can use in our music video to make it more interesting. This also helped me as I was able to practice and expand on my editing skills, for example the cloning shot. I found some of the editing techniques quite hard to do but once I watched a quick tutorial it was much easier. From doing this I learnt how to clone shots, split screens and reverse shots.
